Eaton joins Czech National Competence Center for Transportation

December 4, 2018

Prague, Czech Republic – The Eaton European Innovation Center (EEIC) is now a confirmed partner in the Czech Republic’s National Competence Center for Transportation. Consisting of 29 organizations, spanning both industry and academia, the consortium pursues a wide variety of projects aimed at accelerating transport innovation, with a specific focus on powertrain and chassis technologies.

Eaton’s partners in the consortium include major industry players, such as Siemens, Škoda and Zetor Tractors, as well as highly regarded academic institutions like the University of West Bohemia’s Regional Innovation Centre for Electrical Engineering (RICE), the Czech Technical University in Prague (CVUT) and the Brno University of Technology (VUT).

The National Competence Center for Transportation also recently overcame tough competition from 17 other centers, each of which has a different industry focus, to receive $6 million in Czech government funding. The consortium’s board of directors will select the R&D projects to receive a share of this funding, with academic and industrial partners collaborating closely over the coming 24 months to make them a reality.

Together with RICE, the EEIC is currently preparing for its R&D program exploring “Next Generation Traction Drives for Passenger Cars”. The goal of the program is to produce both a concept and strategy for optimized traction inverters within electric passenger cars. Building in cutting-edge features, the optimized traction inverters will help improve engine efficiency, performance and reliability.

While RICE’s costs will be fully covered by the government grant, Eaton will invest a further $200,000 over the lifetime of the two-year project, which will run from 2019-20. The consortium also expects to receive further government funding after 2020.

The EEIC’s Luděk Janík comments: “We’re very proud to be part of the Czech National Competence Center for Transportation at such a crucial time. One of the most exciting trends in transportation is the rise of electric vehicles and we believe the tipping point for mass adoption is almost here. As such, it’s thrilling to have won government backing to pursue essential research and to know that our work will have a tangible impact on peoples’ lives”.

As a nexus for electrical, vehicle, hydraulic and aerospace innovation, the EEIC is committed to developing technologies that are safer, smarter and more sustainable. One of six Eaton innovation centers globally, the EEIC unites a diverse team of curious, cross-industry experts—pioneering new solutions to tomorrow’s most urgent energy challenges.

EEIC director, Engelbert Hetzmannseder, adds: “The world is currently racing down the road towards the mass electrification of transport. The consortium’s breadth of expertise and resources puts us in a unique position to advance vehicle innovation, and our work today will help make tomorrow’s cars are more efficient and sustainable. By collaborating with so many leading industrial and academic partners, we can also broaden our own knowledge and contacts, while nurturing the next generation of engineering talent”.

Eaton’s products and solutions enable customers use less energy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and do business more sustainably. Our contribution to this new R&D project will help improve quality of life and the environment for everyone.
