Date: January 11, 2017

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. … Power management company Eaton announced that its engine boosting, electrical and fuel- and emissions-saving technologies are on six of the 10 engines chosen by WardsAuto for its 23rd annual “10 Best Engines” competition. The winners were honored today during a ceremony held at the Marriott Renaissance Hotel in Detroit, Michigan.

“We are pleased to see our valued customers receive this prestigious award,” said Scott Adams, senior vice president, Global Product Development, Marketing and Planning, Vehicle Group. “The continuing success we have in providing automakers with leading powertrain technologies, including our historically strong presence with engine valves, superchargers, and advanced valvetrain components is a testament to Eaton’s commitment to our customers. We are proud that our circuit protection and power management devices also are present in both of the award-winning electrified powertrains, demonstrating Eaton’s widespread presence in the automotive propulsion space.”

The Eaton technologies that are part of the winning engines and the seven Eaton facilities that supply them include:

Valves – High performance, super alloy and lightweight:

  • Ford Focus RS – 2.3L turbocharged DOHC I-4 (Ahmednagar, India; Bielsko-Biala, Poland and Nordhausen, Germany)
  • Honda Accord Hybrid – 2.0L DOHC I-4 (Westminster, South Carolina)
  • Mercedes-Benz C300 – 2.0L DOHC I-4 (Bielsko-Biala, Poland)

Supercharger – High efficiency and lightweight:

  • Volvo V60 Polestar – 2.0L turbocharged/supercharged DOHC I-4 (Tczew, Poland)

Roller Rocker Arms – Innovative and durable:

  • Chrysler Pacifica – 3.6L DOHC V-6/dual electric motors (Pondicherry, India)

Eaton technologies have contributed to winning engines since the inception of WardsAuto’s 10 Best Engines program.

According to WardsAuto editors,  the Ford Focus RS engine has “no dead spots in this all-aluminum engine’s power delivery,” while the Accord Hybrid’s engine “may be the best balance yet of performance and fuel economy.” The Mercedes-Benz C300 I-4 “aims squarely at the Goldilocks Zone, succeeding in striking a near-optimal balance between performance, luxury and efficiency,” while the all-new Volvo V60 Polestar’s engine is a “4-cylinder jewel.”

“Eaton’s vast array of technologies are helping the world’s top automakers develop the powerful and energy efficient powertrains needed to meet the requirements of global regulations and discerning customers,” said Gerard DeVito, vice president, Technology, Vehicle Group. “It’s a testament to the hard work and dedication of our employees around the globe that help Eaton make what matters work.”

The WardsAuto 10 Best Engines competition pits the latest engines available in the U.S. market against the returning winners from the previous year. To be eligible, an engine must be available on a production vehicle that is on sale within the first quarter of 2017 and has a base price of less than $62,000. Eight WardsAuto editors evaluate the vehicles in October and November during routine daily driving in metropolitan Detroit. Editors score every engine based on horsepower, torque, drivability, noise and harshness mitigation, flexibility, observed fuel economy and onboard technology.

Eaton supplies the automotive industry with critical components that improve fuel economy, reduce emissions and enhance safety and overall vehicle performance. Principal products include superchargers, valvetrain components, torque control products, fluid conveyance components, light-duty transmissions, fuel emission and powertrain controls, and overcurrent protection.
